Insomnia: Create an Evening Routine

Do you struggle with insomnia? Perhaps it’s difficult to quiet your brain in the evening so you can fall asleep at a reasonable time? Or, if you’re like me, you wake up during the night and then struggle to go back to sleep without tossing and turning for an hour or two.

I recently returned from the UK. After a long day of travel and staying in a studio apartment that had a shower, but no bathtub, I couldn’t wait to take a bath. As soon as I got home I started the tub, added some epsom salts, and relished my time in the warm, sudsy water.

I have continued with that routine because I noticed right away that I was sleeping better. It works for me because it gives me a specific time to put my phone away and plug it in to charge. After I enjoy a long soak in the tub, instead of picking my phone up again, I grab a book and do some reading in my favourite chair. Once I finish reading, I get in bed and do my second meditation session of the day before I go to sleep.

It can be hard to switch off in the evening and just as hard to put electronics away. But it’s key to a good night’s sleep, along with morning sunlight, daily activity, and a healthy lifestyle. Find a routine that supports switching off and I’m here for you if you need ideas.
