Is Your Counsellor Qualified?

Navigating the vast landscape of counseling, therapy, and psychology, one might assume that every practitioner is well-equipped to work with the neurodivergent community. However, as Devon Price, the insightful author of Unmasking Autism, points out, true qualification in this specialized field is a rare find.

My journey into this realm began in preschool special education, working with a handful of incredible children. Yet, as these children grew, so did my understanding and commitment to supporting neurodivergent individuals. While finding a therapist skilled in working with neurodivergent adults can be challenging, my experience spans many years, encompassing a diverse range of neurodiversities such as autism, ADHD, schizophrenia, BPD, and more.

Unlike some counselors, I don’t approach you as a puzzle piece needing repair to fit into society’s mold. Your uniqueness is not a problem to be fixed but a strength to be embraced. Having witnessed the masking required to navigate our neurotypical world, I recognize the importance of honoring your authenticity. Whether you choose to embrace your true self or prefer to mask, you’re perfect just as you want to be.

In my practice, the focus isn’t on changing you; it’s on supporting your mental health in a way that feels right for you. Having discovered my own neurodivergence as an adult, I bring a personal understanding to the counseling journey. You’re not alone on this path, and together, we can navigate the complexities of neurodiversity with empathy and authenticity.
